COERR Mae Sarieng Organized Volunteering Team in Firebreak Construction around Refugee Camp

In order to protect Ban Mae Lama Luang camp from forest fire, COERR Mae Sarieng organized the volunteering work of 149 refugee youth of 75 male and 74 female in making firebreak area around their camp in order to save their community from disaster if dry season forest fire happens.

On March 9, 2018, the volunteering team for firebreak started. Staff explained where and how fire break area can be constructed to cut off the forest fire from the community. The concept was to get rid of anything that can become fuel such as leaves and grass, etc. away from the fire break path, that is to disconnect the fire from coming to the camp.

Then refugee youth were divided into groups; each group started to pave the way around the camp by cutting and removing leaves, deadwood and plants, branches and undergrowth. Some areas were burned down to allow the narrow and long distance path between the forest and the camp compound.
